In the construction industry, we are increasingly seeing the need to reuse materials and reduce environmental impact. Bricks are an important part of this. In the past, bricks were often reused after demolition, but over the years this craft has been lost. As we become more aware of the need for the circular economy, the demand for the reuse of bricks has re-emerged. At Meijs Ingenieurs, we have developed a process to loosen and technically test bricks so that they can find their full place again in new projects.

The importance of round bricks

Every reused brick can contribute to reducing carbon emissions. By loosening bricks and reusing them directly, we save around 0.47 kg of CO₂ per brick. This means a saving of 95% compared to the production of new bricks. In addition, used bricks often have an inhabited character that newly manufactured bricks cannot offer, which increases the aesthetic value of buildings.

Technical tests for safe reuse

At Meijs Engineers, we carry out technical tests to guarantee the quality of the bricks. The bricks are tested for freeze-thaw resistance, compressive strength, water absorption and general structural integrity. These tests ensure that the bricks are still suitable for use in new buildings and fulfil the requirements of Dutch building regulations.

Two scenarios for reuse

In demolition projects, there are usually two options for round bricks:

  1. Back to the market: the bricks can be made available for other construction projects via our network, which includes specialist processor Klinker Historika.
  2. Direct reuse on the construction site: If a demolition project is immediately followed by new construction, the bricks can be stored and then reused in the same project. This leads to cost savings and a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Circular construction requires a new approach

Circular bricks are part of a wider transition to circular construction. It requires a careful approach and collaboration with partners who share the same values of sustainability. By reusing materials such as bricks, we are taking a big step towards a more sustainable construction process.
